To submit a new manuscript to MAPS,
please, use
the MAPS Manuscript Central submission site.
MAPS publishes several
categories of papers. Invited reviews, articles, reports, comments, and
replies are subject to external review. Announcements and memorials are
reviewed by the Editor. Reviewers evaluate submitted paper's scientific
originality, appropriateness of the subject to the journal, and paper's
value to the scientific community. Reviewing of clear, well-prepared
manuscripts will normally be completed in about 45 days. Publication in
the journal (hard copy and electronic) can be expected within 1–3 months
of acceptance.
Articles published in MAPS are original, unpublished, and not being
considered for publication elsewhere. If some parts of the paper have been
submitted or published elsewhere, the reason for including them must be
explained when the manuscript is submitted. The final decision on all
submitted papers and their placement in the journal or its supplement is
made by the Editor.
Reports dealing with routine descriptions of new meteorites or summaries
of specific topics, catalogs and inventories, and abstracts of the annual
Meteoritical Society's meetings will appear in an annual supplement to Meteoritics & Planetary Science. All items appearing in the supplement are
subject to peer review. Catalogs and Inventories are reviewed by the
Nomenclature Committee and Editorial Board, abstracts are reviewed by the
Program Committee. The supplement is published with the July or September
issue, whichever is closer to the date of the annual
Meteoritical
Society's meeting.
Authors can publish color reproductions in MAPS. The charge for
printing figures in color is $720 per page. Depending on the size of
figures, we can often fit more than one figure on one page. We welcome suggestions for
author-supplied artwork for the journal's front cover, however, costs must
be borne by the author. Charge for color on the front cover is $720. These
prices are subject to change.
Invited Reviews
These papers are solicited by the Editor acting on behalf of the Editorial
Board. They provide the readers with a synthesis of a major area of
interest, new insights and/or data. These reviews are meant to promote
interaction within the scientific community and enhance the understanding
of relevant problems. The length and scope of invited reviews is normally
determined by the Editorial Board and is specified in the invitation to
write a review.
Articles
Articles are original papers dealing with major studies that address a
significant area of interest to the readers. They should be as concise as
possible and should not exceed 16 manuscript pages (including tables,
figures, and references). Longer papers will be subject to page charges of
$70 per each additional page. If you are considering submission of a long
paper, you may want to discuss it with the
Editor before submission.
Reports
Reports focus either on a single but significant detail of a topic or
summaries of specific topics. Routine descriptions of new meteorites are
included in this category.
Comments and Replies
Comments on articles previously published in Meteoritics & Planetary
Science and other journals are encouraged. They should be submitted within
12 months of the original article’s publication. The author(s) of the
referred article have the opportunity to prepare a reply. The comment and
reply are published together and are subject to the review and revision
process.
Book and Multimedia Reviews
We encourage the submission of reviews or suggestions of new titles for
review by the journal, though reviews of relevant books, videotapes, and
computer software are usually solicited by the Editor. Reviews are 500–1000
words in length.
Memorials
Meteoritics & Planetary Science publishes memorials for persons who have
made major, long-term contributions to areas of interest to the journal’s
scientific community. The text should not exceed 500 words. It should
emphasize the scientific career of the person, include a bibliography of
major papers, and a photograph. While suggestions are welcome,
memorials are usually solicited by the Editorial Board.
Catalogs and Inventories
This category includes inventories of meteorites and other
extraterrestrial materials collected or obtained by institutions or groups
that do not publish catalogs.
The Meteoritical Bulletin
includes descriptions of new meteorites or important changes in the
descriptions of previously cataloged meteorites. An annual summary appears
in the summer supplement to MAPS. The
Meteoritical Bulletin is edited, compiled, and refereed by
the society's Nomenclature Committee. Information should be submitted
directly to the Bulletin's editor,
Dr. Harold C. Connolly, Jr.
at Kingsborough College of the City University of New York,
Department of Physical Sciences, 2001 Oriental Blvd., Brooklyn, NY 11235,
USA.
Announcements
Announcements of meetings and other matters of interest to the readers
will be published at the discretion of the Editor. |
